There are many variations of family, especially in the Philippines. The traditional ones are the nuclear and the extended family, but not all families has two parents and children. Some families are composed of a single parent and her/his child(ren). Dr. Elena Tesoro, a sociologist in Pampanga, defines family as a relationship of people with mutual benefit. Sometimes, they are the same blood that runs in our veins, the friends we choose and the individuals or groups we are willing to share our time and resources with.

Solo Parents, being one of the marginalized sectors recognized by the Department of Social Welfare and Development Field Office III (DSWD FO III), were given a simple day-off. DSWD FO III organized the Solo Parents Family Day participated by almost 400 Solo Parents all over Central Luzon. This was held on 18 September 2018 at Hacienda Gracia Hotel and Resort in Lubao, Pampanga. The participants were given necessary information on the programs and services they may avail from the department. “It is the policy of the State to promote the family as the foundation of the nation, strengthen its solidarity and ensure its total development. Towards this end, it shall develop a comprehensive program of services for solo parents and their children.” (RA 8972)

A friendly competition showcasing folk dance was also concluded. Cabanatuan City reps bagged the first place on the third streak. “Masaya akong nakikita na maraming masaya,” expressed Rosario Cebricus, Focal Person for Solo Parents and Head of Crisis Intervention Unit.

This is only the kick-off celebration of the National Family Week. Pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 60 issued on September 28, 1992, which aims “to increase awareness on various family issues; enhance effectiveness of national and local efforts to carry out specific programs concerning families by generating new programs concerning families by generating new activities and strengthening existing ones; and promote collaboration among national and local non-governmental organizations in support of multi-sectoral activities.”

DSWD FO III prepared series of events to celebrate National Family Week from September 18-30, 2018.

  • September 18 – Solo-Parents Family Day (Kick-off Activity)
  • September 21-22 – Adoptive and Foster Family Assembly
  • September 24 – Flag Ceremony featuring Family Week
  • September 27 – Advocacy Caravan featuring Filipino Families
  • September 28 – Awarding of 2018 Huwarang Pamilya
  • September 30 – Walk for Life (A conclusion of Family Week and a Kick-off for Elderly Week)
