Ms. Ma. Elena Carreon, Regional Youth Focal Person orients the participants to the Government Internship Program before the start of their 30-day summer job in the DSWD Field Office III.

Eighty youths in Region III have started their summer job in the Department of Social Welfare and Development Field Office III under the Government Internship Program (GIP), April 17.

The screening of applicants was led by Ms. Ma. Elena Carreon, Regional Youth Focal Person. The interns have started yesterday, April 17, 2017 until they can complete 30 days, Carreon said.

The GIP, a component of the Kabataan 2000, was developed with the end goal of providing opportunity for both out of school and in school youths a hands-on experience of working in various government agencies, which they could later use when they later decide to be part of the government workforce.

The program is open to youths who are 18-25 years old preferably a member of the Pag-Asa Youth Association or youth under the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program; in-school youths preferably graduating students willing to pursue schooling; in good health condition; and the monthly income of the family shall not exceed the poverty threshold of P8,022.00.

The program is aimed to initiate the youth to public service; to enable the youth to realize their potentials, become responsible leaders and active participants to national government; and serve as a recruitment mechanism for potential public employee.

This is also in recognition of the demands for more opportunities for young people to earn to augment family income and at the same time enhancing their sense of responsibility and developing positive attitude towards work, the OSY, students and even college graduates/vocational courses will be provided summer job.

The participants are assigned in the DSWD FO III proper (25), residential care facilities (27), and DSWD Provincial Extension Offices (28) to perform not only actual office work but also assist in the implementation of DSWD programs and projects or do direct service work in communities where DSWD programs are implemented in partnership with the LGUs.

Allen Carlos, 18 years old, an intern assigned in the Office of the Field Director says, “Kung wala po ang GIP siguradong tambay lang ako. Ngayon, magkakaroon na ako ng experience sa government work at may pera pa ako na magagamit sa pasukan.” Allen who is an incoming sophomore is a member of the PYAP and Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program.

The GIP is implemented in the DSWD Central and Field Offices in partnership with the local government units.

The DSWD will provide the participants with a daily stipend equivalent to 75% applicable minimum wage rate in the region, which is P268.00/day in Region III. ### (Evelyn T. Manalo)
